A2Z flag display protocols.

Flag display protocols are a set of guidelines and customs to show respect and honor.

Flag display protocols are a set of guidelines and customs followed when displaying flags, particularly national flags, to show respect and honor.

Below are listed primary flag protocols commonly accepted and adhered to:

  • Cleaning and Maintenance: Flags should be kept clean and in good condition. Torn or tattered flags should be replaced and disposed of respectfully.

  • Draping: When a flag is used to drape a casket or coffin, the flag should be placed so the hoist of the flag is at the head of the coffin and top of the flag positioned over the left side of the coffin.

  • Flag Ceremonies: Various ceremonies, such as flag raising ceremonies or flag lowering ceremonies, may accompany the display of flags, particularly at government buildings or military installations.

  • Flag Disposal: When a flag is no longer in a suitable condition for display, it should be disposed of in a dignified manner, typically by burning or by separating the flag into small pieces and buried in a respectful ceremony.

  • Flag Folding: When not in use, flags should be folded properly starting at the fly end of the flag and the hoist tucked neatly in the end of the folds. For instance, the U.S. flag is folded into a triangle, with only the blue field and stars visible.

  • Flag Lighting: If displaying a flag outdoors, ideally the flag should be illuminated from dusk until dawn to ensure the flag remains visible at all times.

  • Flag Positioning: When displaying multiple flags on separate poles, the national flag is usually positioned in the center and higher than other flags. If displayed with flags of other countries, it should be the first one on the left from the viewer's perspective.

  • Flag Respect: Always treat flags with respect and National pride. Flags should not touch the ground, be used as drapery, be used for advertising purposes or burnt under protest.

  • Half-Staff (Half-Mast): To honor individuals or commemorate events, flags are sometimes flown at half-staff (half-mast). The flag is raised to the top of the pole for a moment and then lowered to halfway between the top and bottom. It's typically raised again to full staff at the end of the day.

  • Parades and Processions: When flags are carried in parades or processions, they should be held high and with respect. The national flag should lead the procession.

Flag protocols can vary slightly from country to country, so it's essential to familiarise yourself with the specific flag protocols of your local country, or of a country you are planning to relocate to.
